A 3kW AC solar water pump system was recently installed in Prince Albert.
The 3kW borehole (submersible) solar water pump is powered by a 4kW VSD (variable speed drive) system delivering variable AC power from 5 565 Watts array of PV solar modules.

Solar water pumping systems are a modern and proven means of pumping water in locations where access to grid power is not available, or where the grid is not reliable or economical (expensive). These systems use photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity to power pumps which can be used to pump groundwater or surface water.
Can allow water pumping in remote locations or where grid power is unreliable – anywhere the sun shines
Powered by clean, renewable energy
Pumping availability increases in summer when water requirement is usually greater
Very low operating costs – does not require fuel, requires only minimal service and maintenance, and is virtually free to operate

Each solar water pumping system is unique. Getting the most benefit from a system requires research and design before the first PV module and pump is purchased and installed.

Grid-Tie Solar System 12.5kVA 15kWp 77kWhrs per day
One of this week’s Specialized Solar Systems installations included a 15kWp solar system with Fronius 3 phase grid-tie inverter to supplement their power in a restaurant. The solar installation was done in Humansdorp South Africa.
The second and final stage of the first Jabula sub-centralized off grid solar energy power station is now complete. This stage included six additional houses that were completely retrofitted for the supply of much-needed electrical energy. Our CEO, Jonathan Hodgson was personally on site to assist with the challenge of laying the overhead DC cabling to each house and the complexities due to the informal building site layout and structures – all done using poles and wired from the source installed street light (1).
The solar technologies supplied by Specialized Solar Systems for the Kheis Project include:

Using DC (direct current) technologies, rather than the more traditional AC (alternating current) ones, Specialized Solar Systems has been able to develop off-grid solar systems that are easy to install, safe to use in shacks (no open flames), made to the highest safety design specifications and are remotely manageable.
Specialized Solar Systems is involved as the primary supplier of DC micro-grids for the iShack Project that is providing mass renewable energy electricity, on a pay-for-use basis, to residents of an informal settlement in Stellenbosch (Enkanini), South Africa using only solar energy. The off-grid system that is supplied, the SS20 DC Micro-grid baseline smartbox, uses advanced technologies with build in remote management and is produced by Specialized Solar Systems. Basically, the end-users (customers) of these off-grid DC micro-grid energy producing systems, are allocated payment packages for energy usage. This is all managed remotely by Specialized Solar Systems web-based management platform, SSS-EPOWER, which is an advanced remote energy management utility that has proven to be a very effective tool in off-grid energy management (more to come on SSS-EPOWER).
