A 3kW AC solar water pump system was recently installed in Prince Albert.

The 3kW borehole (submersible) solar water pump is powered by a 4kW VSD (variable speed drive) system delivering variable AC power from 5 565 Watts array of PV solar modules.

Solar water pumping systems are a modern and proven means of pumping water in locations where access to grid power is not available, or where the grid is not reliable or economical (expensive). These systems use photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity to power pumps which can be used to pump groundwater or surface water.

Advantages
Can allow water pumping in remote locations or where grid power is unreliable – anywhere the sun shines

Powered by clean, renewable energy

Pumping availability increases in summer when water requirement is usually greater

Very low operating costs – does not require fuel, requires only minimal service and maintenance, and is virtually free to operate

Equipment is relatively portable and can be easily moved to meet seasonal or variable location needs

 

Disadvantages
Potentially high capital costs

Electrical output will be limited by daylight hours and bad weather. Water storage and battery back up may be required

Each solar water pumping system is unique. Getting the most benefit from a system requires research and design before the first PV module and pump is purchased and installed.

The second and final stage of the first Jabula sub-centralized off grid solar energy power station is now complete. This stage included six additional houses that were completely retrofitted for the supply of much-needed electrical energy. Our CEO, Jonathan Hodgson was personally on site to assist with the challenge of laying the overhead DC cabling to each house and the complexities due to the informal building site layout and structures – all done using poles and wired from the source installed street light (1).

Interviews with SS20 Users

Specialized Solar Systems is involved as the primary supplier of DC micro-grids for the iShack Project that is providing mass renewable energy electricity, on a pay-for-use basis, to residents of an informal settlement in Stellenbosch (Enkanini), South Africa using only solar energy. The off-grid system that is supplied, the SS20 DC Micro-grid baseline smartbox, uses advanced technologies with build in remote management and is produced by Specialized Solar Systems. Basically, the end-users (customers) of these off-grid DC micro-grid energy producing systems, are allocated payment packages for energy usage. This is all managed remotely by Specialized Solar Systems web-based management platform, SSS-EPOWER, which is an advanced remote energy management utility that has proven to be a very effective tool in off-grid energy management (more to come on SSS-EPOWER).

Short video of a recent 42kWh per day residential Off-Grid solar energy system installation completed in Wilderness

The Victron powered off-grid installation consisted of the following components:

  • 2 x Victron Smart Solar 150/85-TR MPPT
  • 1 x 15kVA Victron inverter|charger|controller
  • 7.95 kWp (30 X 265W) PV Solar panels array delivering an average of 42kWh per day
  • 48 x 2V Mil lead acid storage cells in crates with additional water, self-watering maintenance system and control book (47kWh usable at 30% DOD). Total of 159 360kWh.
  • Victron CGX Color Control with battery monitor and Wi-Fi dongle for remote management
  • 1 x Wi-Fi router for GPRS communication
  • Junction box, cables and surge protection for both AC and DC lines
  • Interconnecting cable between energy system and house distribution box (CAROX 15m 3 core steel)
  • Installation of the complete system including single line diagrams, commissioning and COC

Managed solar energy, anywhere

A world first. Specialized Solar Systems completed its first installation of a sub-centralized solar energy power station in conjunction with an innovative client in Cape Town, Zonke Energy.

The installation was done on the outskirts of Cape Town in the suburb called Jabula where grid-power is not available. It consisted of a sub-centralized solar energy station which is a central-based solar energy producing unit that will further supply remotely managed DC solar energy from a central point that will then branch out to further 9-11 households.

Specialized Solar Systems, Kheis Municipality, Red Flow Advance Energy Storage and Peer Africa officially launched the competition for the 1st phase of a powerful Hybrid Solar PV Water Treatment Works back-up power supply micro-grid energy solution in Groblershoop, South Africa.

A ‘ground breaking’ first – the auspicious occasion was attended by municipality officials, company representatives, solar energy enthusiasts and many locals.

The Hybrid Solar PV system used for this pilot project is currently in its first phase of supplying solar generated energy to power the water pumping equipment for the Water Treatment Works (WTW) using the revolutionary Redflow Flow Battery System for energy storage.

The occasion was met with keen interest from other African countries, mines, shopping centers, etc as the contained micro-grid unit is quick to setup, powerful and has a multitude of practical applications.

Specialized Solar Systems has an additional 500 DC Micro-grids systems (SS20-75DC) in the area that efficiently supply’s solar energy in the houses of locals where grid power is not available.

Specialized Solar Systems (SSS) is primarily involved in supplying of all solar technologies to create a sustainable environment for The iShack Project managed by The Sustainability Institute Innovation, a division of the Sustainability Institute.

For the iShack Project, a baseline quick setup remotely managed DC micro-grid solar system was the requirement.

The DC Micro-grid SS20-75DC Managed System with selectable functionality, variable threshold settings, user interactivity and build in remote management features was used as the baseline system and has the following attributes as a DC Micro-grid:
